Nantucket Island Chamber of Commerce's

38th Annual Nantucket Daffodil Festival Weekend

April 27th – 29th

"A Three Million Daffodil Celebration: April's gentle sea breezes and warming sunshine coax new growth from the island's sandy soil, adorning roadsides and gardens with an astonishing variety of daffodils. Come wear your Daffy Hat, watch the Antique Car Parade, have a tailgate picnic and welcome Spring."

Daffy Festival was named one of the "5 don't-miss festivals across the US" on the MSNBC Season Travel. They write, "After a long and snowy winter, the island of Nantucket celebrates the spring thaw each year with its colorful Nantucket Daffodil Festival. This year's festivities, which run from April 29 through April 29th, will feature annual events such as the antique car parade (the vehicles are, of course, bedecked with daffodil blooms), the daffy hat pageant (how many flowers can you fit onto your baseball cap?) and the daffy dog parade (a daffodil-decorated Fido might lack a little dignity, but he'll sure look pretty)."

The first annual Daffodil Weekend began in 1974 by the late Jean MacAusland, a summer resident of Nantucket and former publisher of Gourmet magazine. The first planting of daffodils took place along Milestone Road and today an estimated three million blossoms bloom along roadsides, flower boxes of homes and businesses and gardens. Daffodils are in bloom for about five weeks from early April to mid May.

We've had such seasonably warm weather it's hard to believe Thanksgiving is around the corner and with that brings the 10th Annual Cold Turkey Plunge on Thursday, November 22nd at 10am.

The Cold Turkey Plunge fundraiser benefits the Weezie Library for Children and attracts close to 800 spectators each year, along with several hundred swimmers who plunge at Children's Beach. The Weezie Library was built in 1966 with a generous grant from the Weezie Foundation, named in memory of a very special girl – Louise Frances Walker. The walls of this light filled location is graced with several picture books about Nantucket. There are hand painted tables and chairs including one of Nantucket artist Clara Urbahn's famous animal chairs – a grandfather rabbit. The Weezie Library offers an array of programs and events for children along with many reading levels and formats.

To participate in the Cold Turkey Plunge you can pick up a plunge card at the following locations: Nantucket Atheneum, Weezie Library, Nantucket Looms, Espresso to Go, Nantucket Community pool, Mark-Et or download the form at http://www.nantucketatheneum.org/programs-events/benefit-events/turkey-plunge/.

Theatre Workshop of Nantucket – Peter Pan

Wednesday, July 6th, 2011

According to Wikipedia, "Peter Pan is a character created by Scottish novelist and playwright J.M. Barrie (1860-1937). A mischievous boy who can fly and magically refuses to grow up, Peter Pan spends his never-ending childhood adventuring on the small island of Neverland as the leader of his gang the Lost Boys, interacting with mermaids, Indians, fairies, and pirates, and from time to time meeting ordinary children from the world outside." This is one of the world's most celebrated musicals.

The Theatre Workshop of Nantucket will open Peter Pan, one if its most extravagant and elaborate productions, based on the play by James M. Barrie on Friday, November 19th @ 5:30pm. Directed by Laura Gallagher Byrne and Musical Direction by Robert Behrman. Laura Gallagher Byrne is hoping to recreate the success of last season's Madeline's Christmas, which ran for three weeks and was completely sold out.

Coffin & Sconset Real Estates own, Jack Bulger, will be part of Peter Pan performing as Smee. Smee is Captain Hook's right hand man. Wikipedia describes Smee as an oddly genial man for a pirate; Barrie describes him as "Irish" and "a man who stabbed without offence" – and is shown as a rather stupidly entertaining man interested in loot rather than Hook's more evil pleasures. Smee typically represents a humorous side to pirating, often portrayed as a portly man with a bulbous nose and red cheeks, but J.M. Barrie has hinted at a darker side.

Show dates are as follows:

July 7th – 9th, 13th – 16th, 20th – 24th & 27th – 30th

Wednesday – Saturday @ 5:30pm

Sunday Matinee July 24th @ 3pm

Nantucket Daffodil Weekend Summary and Photos!

Wednesday, May 4th, 2011

Another Nantucket Daffodil Weekend has come and gone but what a wonderful weekend it was. Nantucket had beautiful weather and was filled with adults, children, dogs and cars all decked out in their daffodil colors and garb. The last two years we've been so very lucky with the weather and hopefully that lucky trend will continue. Coffin & 'Sconset Real Estate had a busy weekend. We had agents in and out at our Town office, Bernie Coffin was manning the 'Sconset office and Carol Coffin had a public open house at 64 Sankaty. It seemed to be a successful weekend all the way around! We hope you enjoyed your Daffodil weekend!

* Wear blue clothing
* Light up your house blue using blue bulbs in any outdoor fixtures
* Raise awareness for Autism online
* Spread the word about Light It Up Blue

If you'd like more information you can contact Kim at khoryn@autismspeaks.org or call 646-341-3043.

Nantucket can support Autism and walk on Saturday, August 20th for Walk Now for Autism Speaks. Every 15 minutes a family receives the devastating news that their child has an autism spectrum disorder. Start fundraising today and help change that statistic.
