4th of July on Nantucket

Wednesday, July 7th, 2010

It was truly a remarkable day on Nantucket Island for all the annual 4th of July activities. The sky was blue, the sun was shining brightly, and the temperature was warm.

This year's celebration/activities took place a day early, on July 3rd. Early risers participated in the 20th annual Firecracker 5K Road Race (a 3.1 course out to Monomoy and back) while others took to down town for the annual games, activities, and celebrations. Main Street was closed off to traffic to accommodate various activities such as the watermelon eating contest, pie eating contest, face painting, a puppet show, and the crowd favorite–the water fight! Store fronts were decorated in red, white, and blue and enjoyed the crowds the annual festivities brought–the older crowd could be found getting a coffee at Even Keel or shopping in one of the many wonderful shops that line Main Street.

Out in 'Sconset, visitors and islanders enjoyed the bike decorating contest, watermelon rolling race, and the various antique cars decorated in patriotic themes. Both our offices, 'Sconset Real Estate and Coffin Real Estate, were open Saturday and Sunday and had a great time celebrating with old and new friends who stopped by to say hello.

Sunday was another beautiful day that ended with a clear sky perfect for fireworks.
