One of the greatest things about Nantucket Island is the many athletic events available for islanders and visitors throughout the summer. From the bike paths spanning the island to the nature trails of Sanford Farm and other Conversation sites to the many beaches and oceans–it seems that there is always something active happening on Nantucket.
This past Saturday was the 2nd annual Nantucket Triathlon. Founded in 2009 by Jamie Ranney and Bill Burnett, the Nantucket Triathlon is a sprint triathlon that involves a .25 mile swim at Jetties Beach, a 14 mile bike ride to Madaket and back, and a 3.5 mile run throughout the Cliff Road/Brant Point area. Over 600 people participated in this year's triathlon (73 were Nantucket full time residents), including 3 people from Coffin and 'Sconset Real Estate: Jack Bulger, Jon Merson, and Christina Boling. Bulger, Merson, and Boling all completed the triathlon within 2 hours.
All who participated in the triathlon enjoyed a great race and appreciated the support from the Nantucket community. Many supporters could be found lining the sidewalks of the race route (some with hoses to cool down racers from the humidity), while others shouted words of encouragement from cars that were stopped to make way for racers. In all, it was a great day–weather, spirits, support, and sportsmanship.
Before you know it it will be time for the 2011 Nantucket Triathlon. Interested in participating? Visit the Nantucket Triathlon website www.acktri.com.
