Theatre Workshop of Nantucket – Peter Pan

Wednesday, July 6th, 2011

According to Wikipedia, "Peter Pan is a character created by Scottish novelist and playwright J.M. Barrie (1860-1937). A mischievous boy who can fly and magically refuses to grow up, Peter Pan spends his never-ending childhood adventuring on the small island of Neverland as the leader of his gang the Lost Boys, interacting with mermaids, Indians, fairies, and pirates, and from time to time meeting ordinary children from the world outside." This is one of the world's most celebrated musicals.

The Theatre Workshop of Nantucket will open Peter Pan, one if its most extravagant and elaborate productions, based on the play by James M. Barrie on Friday, November 19th @ 5:30pm. Directed by Laura Gallagher Byrne and Musical Direction by Robert Behrman. Laura Gallagher Byrne is hoping to recreate the success of last season's Madeline's Christmas, which ran for three weeks and was completely sold out.

Coffin & Sconset Real Estates own, Jack Bulger, will be part of Peter Pan performing as Smee. Smee is Captain Hook's right hand man. Wikipedia describes Smee as an oddly genial man for a pirate; Barrie describes him as "Irish" and "a man who stabbed without offence" – and is shown as a rather stupidly entertaining man interested in loot rather than Hook's more evil pleasures. Smee typically represents a humorous side to pirating, often portrayed as a portly man with a bulbous nose and red cheeks, but J.M. Barrie has hinted at a darker side.

Show dates are as follows:

July 7th – 9th, 13th – 16th, 20th – 24th & 27th – 30th

Wednesday – Saturday @ 5:30pm

Sunday Matinee July 24th @ 3pm

Save the Fireworks!

Wednesday, February 2nd, 2011

Will Nantucket have 2011 Independence Day Fireworks?

Since 1993 Nantucket's brilliant July 4th fireworks have been funded through the Visitor Services share of the room occupancy tax and the Cape and Islands license plate fund. Taxes are down and license plate fund are not available this year. $50,000 is needed to set off this pyrotechnics show. The actual display is $35,000, which includes the trained pyro-technicians and a barge must be used to protect endangered bird species. Security is also necessary and portable toilets are needed for the comfort of the spectators.

The Nantucket Visitor Services and the Nantucket Island Chamber of Commerce have raised about 75% of the $50,000 needed. The Visitor Services raised about $7,000 from t-shirt sales and an anonymous donor has pledged $10,000 for the fireworks. If $50,000 is not raised before February 16th meet of the Board of Selectmen, there may be no fireworks.

Imagine what the loss of our fireworks could do. It would not only curtail our memories and summertime fun but it could quite possibly reduce tourism.

There are two ways to donate – as a business or an individual and no amount is ever too small. You can go to www.nantucketchamber.org/members/email/FireworksDonationForm.pdf.

If you have questions or suggestions to help, please contact Kate Hamilton at Visitor Services, 508-228-0925, Lawrel Strauch Spera at Chamber of Commerce, 508-228-1700 or Gene Mahon at gene@mahonabouttown.com.
