Nantucket Emergency Food Pantry

Tuesday, February 8th, 2011

The Nantucket Emergency Food Pantry is located in the basement of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church on 20 Fair Street and is sponsored by the Interfaith Council.

Donations are graciously received at the Food Pantry distribution center off the St. Paul’s parking lot on Fair Street, at all Churches and Stop and Shop exit. Please remember currently dated and unopened foods only.

The Nantucket Emergency Food Pantry is open 4-6 pm, Tuesdays and Thursdays, and other times in an emergency. In case of emergency, please leave a message on the Food Pantry’s voicemail508.228.7438 – or contact any Island clergy.

Each family that goes in to the Food Pantry is given food designed to last for three days. They are given one “dry bag” with non-perishable goods such as spaghetti, canned sauce, canned fruit and cereal and one “cold bag” with perishables such as milk, cheese and meat.

A youth branch of Rotary International, The Nantucket High School Interact Club, is helping Andy Reis and the Nantucket Emergency Food Pantry raise money to buy perishable goods.

The busiest months at the Food Pantry are December, January and February, so the Nantucket High School Interact Club created  “The Charitable Perishable Food Project” and all monies collected will go directly toward the purchase of perishable food. Various island businesses, Nantucket Ice Rink, Nantucket Public Schools and local pharmacies, have cups that will be there until the end of February. The total raised is more than $800.
